“The 9th Exhibition Trials of Contemporary Japanese Paintings” is a Nihonga -focused exhibition that explores the role of Kakejiku (掛軸hanging scroll) in modern spaces.
Kakejiku (Hanging scrolls) was once a very important item in traditional Japanese houses. However, its place has been lost with the burgeoning of modern homes and interiors. In this exhibition, nihonga artists from different backgrounds gather in an exercise to explore the appreciation and re-situating of kakejiku in modern spaces. Works by the artists will be displayed in three different rooms- concrete, wood-paneled and Japanese-style, suggesting interesting relevance in modern spaces. The Osaka leg of the exhibition will feature additional painted works exploring「生活の中の美」the beauty in life.

Inoue Yusuke is a Nihonga-style contemporary artist. Coming from a formal, ‘academic-style’ background in Nihonga, he began to question the conventions and stereotypes of his art university training. The departure from that was to start afresh, letting the artists’ own contemporary sense come through yet remaining grounded on strong classics (古典) research.
